Lit Electric Halifax electrician, from the panel to the pot lights

Lit Electric is run by Neil Sanford, a journeyman electrician. We do residential electrical work across HRM: panel upgrades, EV chargers, heat pump circuits, renos and repairs.

Permit and inspection, handled

In Nova Scotia, only a certified electrician can take out a wiring permit. We pull it, book the inspection and make sure you get a copy of the report.

Serving Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, Clayton Park, Spryfield, Sackville, Cole Harbour and Fall River.

What we do

Mostly houses: the upgrades that come with heat pumps and electric cars, the wiring for renos and basements, and the repairs nobody plans for. Small commercial jobs too.

Tell us about your job
  • Panel upgrades

Still on a 60 or 100 amp panel, or an old fuse box? We upgrade to 100 or 200 amp service and coordinate the disconnect and reconnect with NS Power.

    Permit and inspection included

  • EV chargers

Level 2 chargers in garages and driveways. We do a load calculation first, so you know whether your panel can take it or whether a load management device will do the job for less.

Hardwired units or a 240-volt plug

  • Heat pumps and 240-volt circuits

Dedicated circuits for heat pumps, hot tubs, ranges, dryers and baseboard heat. If your heat pump installer needs an electrician, we work alongside them.

  • Renovations and basements

Rough-in and finish wiring for kitchens, bathrooms, basements, additions and secondary suites. We fit around your contractor's schedule, or work with you directly.

  • Lighting

Pot lights, under-cabinet LEDs, fixtures, dimmers, and outdoor and landscape lighting. Pot lights can usually go into a finished ceiling without opening it up.

  • Older wiring and safety

Knob and tube, aluminum branch wiring, two-prong outlets and missing GFCI protection. These are the things insurers and home inspectors flag. We'll tell you what actually needs replacing and what doesn't.

  • Generator hookups

Interlock kits and transfer switches, so a portable generator can safely run your furnace, fridge and well pump during an outage.

No back-feeding through the dryer plug

  • Repairs and troubleshooting

A breaker that keeps tripping, dead outlets, flickering lights, a switch that's warm to the touch. We track down the cause and fix it.

Wired for 100 amps. Asked to run a heat pump and an EV.

A lot of Halifax houses were wired long before heat pumps, induction ranges and electric cars. Each of those wants its own 240-volt circuit, and on a 100 amp panel that adds up fast.

Before we quote a new panel, we do a load calculation. Sometimes a load management device lets a charger share the capacity you already have, for a lot less than a service upgrade.

Lit Electric is Neil Sanford's company

Neil is a journeyman electrician based in Halifax. He started Lit Electric to do residential work the way he'd want it done in his own house: permitted, inspected, explained in plain English, and cleaned up after.

You deal with Neil from the first call to the final inspection. If something isn't worth fixing, he'll tell you that too.

Our kitchen breaker kept tripping. Neil found a loose connection in one of the outlets within twenty minutes and showed us exactly what had happened.

Our insurance company wanted the knob and tube gone. Neil gave us a clear quote, finished when he said he would, and kept the wall patching to a minimum.

Twelve pot lights in the living room and kitchen, and no big holes in the ceiling. Clean, on time, and the bill matched the quote.

He put in a generator interlock for us before winter. Simple to use, and he walked us through switching over twice so we'd remember.

Storm season is coming. Is your generator hooked up safely?

An extension cord through the window or a back-fed dryer plug is how people get hurt. An interlock kit or transfer switch lets your generator run the furnace and fridge the right way. Book it before the first big outage.
